“You should meet Gareth Eames, the supervisor here. A Brit. What a slimeball.”
   — Sally Linsay

Gareth Eames studied engineering and acoustics in England and is the nearest thing to a chief executive at the GapSpace facility.[1][2]

The Long Earth

A few years after Step Day, Gareth, aged twenty at the time, wanted a girl to notice him.[1]

So with his friend Lol, a student in quantum physics, they went to a ring of ancient standing stones in the middle of a forest in Oxfordshire, on a dark night.

A legend said that those stones would sing to keep demons away. As they unpacked their gear, wondered who had to bring the beers and set the phone that would record the sounds made when they would hit the stones, a band of trolls appeared in the middle of the stone ring and began singing.

Lol, being panicked, asked Gareth to make them stop and they started to hit the stones with the tools they brought. The stones, shaped to emit discords, drove the trolls away.

The Long War

Gareth was the one who told Frank Wood about the Gap and is described as a "smooth-talking Brit".[3]

Having a background in acoustics, and hating the trolls with a passion, he found a way to drive them away with discords and turned it into a weapon.[4]
